BACK

Hanson ROVE Interview NOVEMBER 16TH 2004. Rove: Alright my next guests are three brothers from Tulsa, who have sold over fifteen million albums worldwide, they've got three grammy nominations to their credit, their back in the country welcome them now to Rove Live, Zac, Taylor and Isaac HANSON!

Zac: (something I can't work out)

Taylor: I have to say that was quite a scene backstage

Rove: You're telling me!

Taylor: It looked pretty passionate

Rove: I think I've hit puberty

Taylor: Are you ok?

Rove: I feel pretty good!

Isaac: The last two segments reminded me a little too much of backstage at our shows

Rove: A lot of people might not of seen you for awhile so lets run through now how old you are all now so everyone in the audience of an equivalent age can scream as the prospect of you -

Zac: You start (? )

Rove: I'm 30

Zac: I'm 19

Taylor: *points to self * 21

Isaac: 24

Rove: and ah, who's birthdays tomorrow?

Isaac: ah mine

Taylor: He's 24 tomorrow

Rove: He's 24 tomorrow! Any plans for the birthday?

Isaac: Ah a show tomorrow a sold out show here in Melbourne and that's going to be great. I think that in a way is kind of like the best birthday present someone can have, a lot of fans coming to a show I'm like the luckiest, I'm like one of the luckiest guys around, I get to go and play music -

Rove: Zac and Taylor have got it easy, they don't have to buy a present this year!

Isaac: They don't buy me presents anyway so -

Zac: (laughing) He cheats, he doesn't buy us birthday presents either so -

Isaac: Hey!

Rove: Now when you guys first burst onto the scene you were all fairly young

Zac: I was six when we started, and that about five years before anyone saw what we were doing

Taylor: Well, before we came to Australia

Zac: You know its always just been about making music, and obviously having that many people know you and that many people have heard your records and want to come to concerts and things, its an amazing thing that any band around the world just hopes to get that opportunity to do so

Taylor: I remember the first time just going to see coming to Australia and seeing the fans here and just being in awe you know

Rove: Was that when you came in 1997? Was that the first time?

Taylor: First time we came to visit so you know

(show footage of crowd )

Rove: Cause this is the footage of when you were here, and it was incredible, it was I could only imagine that kind of fame

Isaac: I think it was 25 000 people or something like that in there

(Shows footage of a girl with Hanson writing on her face)

Taylor: Wow, looks painful

Isaac: That girl looked like she had it rough there! Someone in the concerts (? ) like 'You're not getting closer to the stage!' (punches hand)

Rove: Is there any part of you that's like, when you go through that because we've got footage of you, when you look back at it now all these press clippings of photography and all this kind of press is there something like you were going through an age where you were just like 'can we burn all of that?'

Taylor: Um, there's moments, yeah, there's moments where like "that shirt?... No"

Isaac: Yeah I still get those moments too every once in awhile these days too "that shirt? ah No, not so good"

Taylor: yeah, I said that

Isaac: Oh, sorry

Rove: Now, the rest of your family, cause there's like seven children in the family

Taylor: We have yeah, they're all younger, I mean we're the oldest of a big family

Rove: Is everybody else musical as well?

Taylor: Their musical, but nobody is kind of going 'hey I want to be in a band' I mean obviously their around us, they used to travel with us when we were really young you know cause we were -

Zac: Cause I was eleven

Taylor: So they would come along and see the world, so they've been around it so they've loved music but I don't think there's a Hanson you know, Hanson 2.

Rove: (laughs) Hanson 2!

Isaac: The thing about us is that back in the day we that were kind of like psychotically driven to do music,

Taylor: much like today!

Isaac: yeah exactly I don't know what was wrong with us

Taylor: yeah exactly, It's always been just, love to play, love to play live, I remember that, being in Melbourne for the first time showing up going to do a couple of acoustic songs

Isaac: Still have that acoustic guitar with me for this show tomorrow (from the clip)

Taylor: Doing an acoustic show tomorrow night and it was just seeing those fans for the first time was like this is what I always want to be doing.

Rove: and Taylor you're a Dad! Will we see a 'Hanson 2' in the next generation of Hanson coming through, so all of you with children at home can go "Well if I missed out, my daughters won't!"

Taylor: He is a cute one ladies, watch out. He's really musical I have to say, he's very smart which, I don't know where he got that from!

Zac: He's also spent so much time around us

Taylor: Wait wait wait I said smart, then you say he's spent time around us!

Zac: Well I didn't mean that part, I meant the music thing! His whole life has been basically, this most recent album, his whole life has been spent making that. And so he's just been through studio process and touring. He walks on stage whenever we're rehearing and he's like "Bang bang! Tar! Key!"

Taylor: The poor guy, we've infected him (laughs)

Rove: And actually Speaking of the latest album Isaac, 'Underneath', this must be very exciting because this was released on your label?

Isaac: Yes it was we, are a few years back parted from our record company and took the album that we were making with them and released it independently in the United States had a number one Independent debut in the United States.

Taylor: It's different also you know every band starts out, Independent you know, your just doing your thing, and you know we've had a lot of success it's been amazing to have fans around the world but after the Industries been changing a lot, we just felt like we wanted to build on own music we wanted to do it differently, and it's a different kind of gratification to put out a record and have success, not only as a band but as a record company and to work with, you know we've worked with different Independent labels from around the world to put it out and it's very cool.

Isaac: and the important thing is flexibility in the years to come I mean the music industry has kind of gone through a lot of restructuring lately constant corporate merger and what not and we feel like that the best place that we as a band and most bands can be in is in a very flexible to constantly be doing music and never worry about it.

Zac: A lot of yoga

Isaac: A lot of yoga

Rove: Is there still a sense of risk though even for people like you

Taylor: There's a huge sense of risk

Rove: Because you know, you've still got such a huge fanbase but to go Independent is it a scary thing to go through?

Zac: Somebody was saying it's much more lucrative for you when you sell a record, because you the label also, but what they forget is that your also spending all that money on the front end to show people that -

Taylor: Make the records and just to get on tour, all the things, you just have a different perspective on it we've always been very hands on, we've always loved to do everything, but it's just a different thing when your really taking a risk all yourself. It comes down to what do you want to be doing in ten years and It comes down to your trust and belief in the music and belief in the fan base and really building that connection stronger, I mean we don't want it to be four years before we're back in Australia again.

Rove: Well we look forward to having you back and so to do all the people, I'm not joking they are screaming out the front of this building. We've already had one building this year burn to the ground boys, do not do it again!

Isaac: That was when we forgot to come!

Rove: In the meantime, the album 'Underneath' including the single 'Penny and Me' is out now. Please thank the boys From HANSON!
