By Demand Interview

By Demand Interview, March 23rd, 2000 BACK

 By Demand- March 23rd 00

 Hosts- interviewers Paula and Andrew

Andrew: if you've just joined us we had to tell everyone earlier we'll have the doors open because people have been here since five in the morning who wanted the doors open so they could get a good glimpse of... but have to be able to hear them of course

Paula: Who they wanted to get a glimpse of was put your hands together for HANSON!!

Taylor: they know the song better then we do, they're singing all the words ( to the where's the love video)

Andrew: You need a chorus you know where to come! Welcome, welcome

 Taylor: Thanks for having us

Isaac: Glad to be here, glad to be here

Paula: How do you handle this? This is the first time that we've had to actually see this many hundreds of screaming girls, how do you do it? Your just used to it now?

Isaac: It's exciting it's very cool well you heard them before I don't know whether people on the TV could hear it but they were singing every lyric

Paula: well before when where's the love was on they sang every single word at the top of their voices

Andrew: even down to the "Wo!"

 Isaac: yeah exactly

Andrew: some folks have been here since, who's been here since five in the morning? Five in the morning come from across the country just to see you guys. Glad to have you back in Australia it's been three years since you were here last, you've all grown up got deeper voices, written a new album...

 Isaac: Yes

Andrew: How was it writing songs for the second album because everyone says there's a big pressure

Taylor: Put it this way, if we had written songs in his amount of time we'd be doing really well if we hadn't written anything

Andrew: How do you write songs, do you come up with a riff and then...

Isaac: It wasn't particularly different than before, your just constantly coming up with new song ideas as time goes on I dunno...

Taylor: You can always write a song, it's something your never really stopping doing, I mean we're thinking about the next album and hopefully it won't take three years for that and so your just constantly thinking about the next song ideas it could be us all sitting around jamming or somebody starts playing the guitar or piano. It could almost be anything.

Paula: Do your little brothers and sisters annoy you when your trying to write songs?

Taylor: Um no, they're cool about it.

Isaac: Our little two year old sister will often at times come into the room and start dancing around and..

Taylor: Or she'll just walk over to the piano and start like banging on the piano. (demonstrates) She's longing to play.

Isaac: And our six year old brother is often playing the piano and be like "hey Ike, listen to this, I wrote a song." So they're all very much into the music thing. I'm not sure as to whether, People are always asking us "Are they going to join the band?" and I don't think so.

Taylor: Zac just, people start to say "Are they gonna..." and Zac just says "No!" Before they even finish asking the question.

Paula: And Zac, do the two big brothers boss you around?

 Zac: Oh No.

Taylor: No no, he bosses us around.

Isaac: He does, he does! We're out, we're out having a good time and out at a movie, or out at a coffee shop or whatever and Zac will be like...

 Taylor: "We gotta go home!"

Isaac: "Guys we gotta go home." We're like "Zac come on we're having a great time "guys we gotta go..."

Taylor: "We have a plane flight"

Isaac: "We have a plane flight tomorrow!"

Taylor: Zac's like cracking the whip

Paula: So can you guys if you guys want to go down to a cafe for a coffee in your hometown, can you guys do that?

Taylor: Oh yeah, we can do that.

Isaac: I mean you will definitely run into people who will be asking you to sign something...

 Taylor: Oh yeah exactly

Isaac: I guess you got to start worrying when people aren't asking you cause then...

Zac: Then you go "nobody likes us lets go to the mall"

Andrew: I went and saw you the other night at Sega World, that's where this image is up here is from, (video footage of Isaac play guitar at Sega World) I'd never seen you guys playing live before because I wasn't in Melbourne when you played in Melbourne last time you were here, and it was awesome! You know, I didn't expect you guys, I mean, I knew you were great muso's, but to come out, you were so tight, you really played really well and your playing a gig in Brisbane?

 Isaac: Yes we are

Taylor: Yeah we're going to be doing a short gig, it's for charity, it's a short gig...

Isaac: It's for the Smith Family

Taylor: It's at the Botanic Gardens

Isaac: The royal botanic gardens in Brisbane on Saturday the 25th

Andrew: Only two dollars to go see Hanson!

 Isaac: Two dollars

Taylor: and it all to charity

Isaac: and it is not a full show, it's only like you know forty five minutes as opposed to two hours

Andrew: There's this old thing I used to hear one night late when watching the country music awards "Only King can harmonize" and my dad is a doctor and I asked him about he has this theory that

people have similar looking faces from the same families...

 Taylor: They can harmonize?

Andrew: they have similar shaped larynx, they're voices blend very well

 Taylor:

Isaac: You used a technical term "larynx" you know what your talking about!

Andrew: And you guys can, I have not live harmonies like that blending so well, it was a joy.

 Isaac: Thanks

Andrew: Go and see them in Brisbane, fly there if you have too!

Paula: I want to ask you guys what do you do in your leisure time, just hanging on the couch watching TV

Isaac: Ah, we do that, you'll surf the web, you'll email your friends...

Paula: What sites do you go on Isaac? What sites on the web are your favourite?

Isaac: Often times when I'm surfing the web, I'm actually doing research, I'm actually making sure that our website is updated and all that kind of stuff so most of the time I'm doing that. When I'm on the web, just different things what your interested in...

Taylor: Ikes gotten really into ebay go on and like find, we're lego freaks we're still just totally into lego...

 Andrew: Ah I love lego!

 Taylor: We collect lego...

Zac: It's more kind of like "Wow this piece is like..."

Taylor: The vintage 83 piece quarter!

 Zac: Not out anymore

Andrew: I've got lego techniques with a motor inside, if you want I could drag it up from my place...

Isaac: They have some of the coolest technique stuff where you can actually do the remote control...

Taylor: It's pretty nuts, we're collectors.

Andrew: This is a request show and we want to get everyone else's requests on but we thought we couldn't have you here without requesting a song, what would you like to see today?

Taylor: What's the name of that song...

 Zac: We've gotten turned down...

 Isaac: "Coffee and TV"
Taylor: "Coffee and TV" by Blur, that's the actual video.

Andrew: What Hanson demanded here on By Demand, we'll be back with Hanson here on By Demand!

Andrew: We're back on the show Hanson still here at By Demand live around Australia.

 Taylor: We haven't left yet

Andrew: You can fax us if you have a question be quick though! I have to get this fax in because Jessica faxes us everyday for Hanson and she asks "Can you tell me a little about the making of the album and how you liked working with the choir and why did you decide to release "This Time Around" here in Australia first before the USA?

Isaac: Actually that was not our decision, that is the record companies decision as to how they feel when is the best timing for them to release the album depending on how the market is.

Taylor: But of course Australia is awesome. So you guys

Isaac: You guys deserve to be the first country to get the it

Taylor: Australia is the first place to get the album

Isaac: Cause actually Australia is, there are more people like in the relation to the population of Australia there are more people that own a Hanson record then anywhere in the world. You guys deserve it!

Andrew: There you go Jessica will be stoked now, she'll be doing laps round her house.

Taylor: She sends a fax in everyday?

 Andrew: Everyday

Taylor: Wow, well thank you Jessica!

Isaac: Thank you , you rock. Thank you very much.

Paula: Now I've got to ask a question for the girls, your all getting a bit older and we know lots of girls like you and...

Isaac: No, we don't have girlfriends

Paula: No, no I was not going to ask you that! I was going to ask is there any female other artists that you admire, how you got any favourite artists yourself?

Taylor: Well if your talking female artists Aretha Franklin of course the creme of soul. As far as somebody you'd like to work with.

Isaac: ah Sheryl Crow, Lauren Hill... I don't know...

Paula: You don't have any posters of any girls on your walls at home?

 Zac: No no
Isaac: We don't really, we don't have any posters on our wall at home at all

Taylor: We're not big poster buyers

Isaac: Our wall has white paint on it

Andrew: Oh your Mum won't let ya

Paula: Is there anyone that you've met that has really been...

Zac: No, our Mum would let us, it really doesn't matter what our Mum think, we just don't buy any posters

Paula: Who have you met that has really taken you back?

Taylor: Well we did meet Sheryl Crow, that was really cool we're definitely big fans of her, she's a really cool person, as an artist I think she's really cool produces all of her stuff, writes all her stuff and we've sat a few rows away from Aretha Franklin at the Grammies so that was pretty amazing. There's not really one particular artist that I would say influences us really strongly...

 Paula: Was the Grammies amazing?

Taylor: Oh the Grammies was really cool yeah.

Isaac: It was really cool to be nominated of course it was three years ago but to be nominated on your debut album for three Grammies was just like "Wo" so we all kind of sat their in amazement.

Paula: Did you get nervous? Did you get butterflies?

Isaac: A little bit, but not really, we've never particularly had a stage fright problem. I think we all are pretty comfortable on stage.

Taylor: The thing is once you get out there , your enjoying the music your just having a good time and you feel comfortable and we've been doing it long enough to just feel comfortable up there.

Isaac: We've been doing it for eight years, so by now we should be used to it.

Paula: So it would be pretty hard to get nervous now

Taylor: You get excitement, it's like yes going out on stage!

Isaac: It's excitement, it's adrenaline and when you get out there your just...

 Taylor: Have a great time

 Isaac: Having a good time

Andrew: We've had people, as I said before since five o clock this morning, do you mind answering some questions?

 Taylor: yeah sure

 Isaac: Alright

Andrew, hello what's your name? Stephanie meet Taylor, do you have a question for Taylor?

Stephanie: Well it was for Isaac Actually. We're really big fans of Jonny Lang and we were wondering what it as like to work with him?

Isaac: It was really great to work with Jonny Lang he is a very cool person amazing guitar player and that's really why we had him on the record, was because he's such a great player, we met him while we were touring in `98 and just asked him if he wanted to play and he came on and he played which was very cool.

Taylor: Yeah, Jonny is awesome. He's an amazing player obviously so...

Andrew: ( To Taylor) hey that's vegemite man come on, don't throw your vegemite away!

Taylor: And we got chocolate we're getting food of all kinds here!

Paula: Have you got a question for Hanson?

Girl: I just want to know have you been surfing in Australia lately?

Taylor: We actually have, well not exactly great surfing but we went down to the beach in Sydney and did a little bit of surfing it wasn't a lot

Isaac: It was a windy day

Taylor: but then we're not that great surfers so I guess it really doesn't matter

Paula: Who's the best surfer out of you three?

Taylor: Who's the best surfer? Well I don't think we're at the level we're we'd say who was the best surfer.

 Zac: No way

Taylor: But we have fun doing it... so

Andrew: Do you have a question for the guys?

Girl: Yeah, what brand of underwear are you wearing?

Taylor: I'll have to pass on that

Andrew: Any more questions for the guys?

Another Girl: Are you ever going to dye your hair?

Zac: ah no our hair is going to live for a long time I think

Taylor: We won't be graying for awhile, we might I don't know, it's never crossed my mind

Girl: How did Zac get started in drumming? Cause he's inspired me

Zac: I think it was just a necessity in the band, we all picked up instruments and that was the one that was left so...

Girl: If you could relive any of the experiences you've had during your past successes, what would it be and why?

Taylor: What experience would we relive...

 Zac: Considering that we can't

Taylor: What experience would we relive, we went on this ride in Toronto Canada where we were strung up on this wire and then dropped off and then you swing and your on this, yeah the fly thing, I would relive that actually I would love to do that, so

Isaac: Well that's one of those things that you could relive cause you could just go back to the park and whoooohh!

 Taylor: Well you know...

Zac: Can you do that sound effect again? ( Isaac does noise again)

Paula: Have you ever bunjee jumped?

 Isaac: No bunjee jumping, no.

Taylor: I think I would skydive before bunjee jumping, I don't know!

Zac: Personally I just don't want to bunjee jump and then have my head ripped off my spine, your just jerking your muscles off

Isaac: I'm afraid bunjee jumping would be a longer death

Taylor: What happens if you just get a couple of inches too short and you loose your forehead you know

Girl: I've heard you guys were working with Larryland

Isaac: Are we going to be working with Larryland? Is that the question?

Taylor: Yeah are you guys there? We are going to be, Larryland is a band we met through our manager and they're going to be touring with us this summer and we're really excited about that and you guys can check out their website by going to our website there's a link to our site, they're from Denmark.

Isaac: Actually two Danes, an Irish guy, an American guy and a Swedish guy, there a really cool band.

Zac: of course not to go into too much detail

Taylor: But you can check the out they're really cool.

Girl: This is a dare from a friend but do you guys have an inny or an outie belly button?

Taylor: I think we're... Zac you decide whether you want to answer this question.

 Zac: Ah...

Isaac: Kind of an odd question

Taylor: I think we're all innies.

Paula: So when you get holidays, now that you've traveled the world quite extensively, where is your ultimate holiday?

 Taylor: Our ultimate holiday...

 Isaac: Australia

 Paula: Really?

Taylor: Australia yeah, we've been looking forward to coming back

Isaac: I have an unusual fondness for the country, I don't know why, it's very cool, we enjoy it.

Paula: You have the biggest smile on your face, love it, it's beautiful.

Isaac: (continuing on) I think it's probably because I know the great barrier reef is fairly close and that's just something I want to do at some point, go to the great barrier reef.

Andrew: Guys, it's been awesome to have you thanks so much for coming.

 Isaac: Thank you

Taylor: Thanks for having us, thanks you guys.

Paula: We have to put another song on for you, any song you'd like.

Zac: Thriller, We've asked for this song a couple of times and we've been turned down cause it's too long, so no ones played it for us so. so ah Thriller.

Taylor: I think "Thriller" Michael Jackson's thriller was voted like the best video of all time or whatever, so lets play it Thriller!

 Andrew: Ladies and gentlemen

 Andrew/ Paula: Hanson!
